Cohart Beta Onboarding
- Overview
- During the beta development of Cohart’s social media app, one of the key challenges
was designing a fast, efficient onboarding process that captured just the right amount of user
information to help gradually build an audience for the platform.
- contribution
- I redesigned the onboarding process to be faster and more efficient, aiming to improve
retention rates among early adopters, gather valuable user feedback, and increase platform awareness.
- outcome
- Gained over 50 early adopters and increased retention rates by 80%.
- problem
- The previous onboarding process required users to navigate through 12 screens, which became a common
complaint among early adopters. While the flow effectively explained the app's purpose, the high drop-off rate
indicated that the extensive information required before accessing the app's features was a barrier to user engagement.
- 1.Phone Number
- 2.Agreement to guidelines
- 3.Name
- 4.Location
- 5.Title
- 6.Interest
- 7.Passion
- 8.Intention
- 9.Connection
- getting people in the door
- After analyzing the onboarding processes of several similar apps,
I identified three key pieces of data to prioritize during onboarding:
- 1.Phone number to grant access to the beta
- 2.Name to establish a presence on the app
- 3.Preferred art medium to personalize the user experience
- Make it easy
- The previous layout of the options made the descriptions difficult to see, as they were centered rather than anchored. To improve visibility,
I anchored the description to the bottom left corner, allowing users to easily associate the text with the corresponding button. Additionally, I introduced
an overlay for the button's active state, which highlights the text more effectively and clearly indicates when an option is selected.
- make it fun
- One of Cohart's missions is to help enthusiasts discover emerging talents and refine their taste in art. To support this goal, I proposed using the
names of famous artists as placeholder names during the onboarding process. This approach is designed to inspire discovery and provide users with a glimpse of
the company's mission. The bottom half of the screen features an image of the artist alongside a brief description, enhancing the user experience.
